“Politics and religion shouldn’t mix” can be often heard today. Our forebears would have found it as strange a saying as millions still do throughout the world. But we can understand why it is said.

We see political and national conflicts too often clothed in religion. We see the hurt that religious intolerance and narrow judgement do to human hope and dignity. It is no wonder that we prefer religion to be private.

The Gospels won’t let us keep it to ourselves however. Throughout the ages, men and women have been inspired by God’s grace and generosity to stand up for justice, freedom and acceptance of all...
