Too often the church, week by week, can look like an entertainment venue. (Sometimes it really is!) What’s on today? Shall I bother?

The church’s year gives us a way of seeing church very differently. Slowly but certainly, the story unfolds, from hope as tiny rumour in the chaos we make of God’s good creation to hope fulfilled in the life-changing work of Jesus and the gift of the church to the world as his Body. The story may begin in darkness. It brings us into light and purpose for the world and ourselves so much bigger than we imagine.

Tossed and turned though we may be in the inner and outer storms of life, we are given year by year a loving grounding in the depth, height, breadth and richness of God’s life. Advent looks for God’s coming as human being, taking flesh and dwelling among us (much more than a babe!) The wonder of Christmas and Epiphany declares that this light in Christ is for all. Lent gathers us to make ready for the real turning-point of Holy Week and Easter...
