Jesus makes a startling and often overlooked promise in John’s Gospel. "I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these." (John 14.12) How can this be?

It's all much bigger than we thought. It comes in the middle of the intense conversation and action of Jesus with his disciples on the night before he died. Across five chapters of John's Gospel, Jesus prepares them for his going and promises the giving to them of the Holy Spirit, through whom these works will be done. From this promise flow the church and its first calling; to be Christ to the world in worship, witness and service of all in the strength of the Holy Spirit. All that Jesus does makes this promise trustworthy.

It makes the church much more than a club for believers or a society for fans of Jesus. It is a gathering of those who dare to want to follow Jesus in his Cross and resurrection and who trust this promise...
